Long, long day

We arrived in Phnom Penh today around 11:45 am. Went through and got Linda's visa. That was pretty smooth. But when we went to get our luggages, one of our boxes was missing. We had to filled out a claim report and that was an ordeal. Next we met with our driver and on the way out of town, he stopped to fill up the tank. I went inside to pick up some water and the guy totally ripped me off. At first I gave him too much - I couldn't do the calculation fast enough in my head. When I realized that, I went and asked for me change and the jerk had the audacity to say he was going to give me change but I walked away too fast. I think he still short changed me about $0.50, but you know it's the principal of it all that really mattered.

So we left Phnom Penh and headed out to Battambang. On the way we stopped for a late lunch. I thought it was a good rest stop since it was clean, had nice private shaded cabana style sitting areas. The whole area was garden like. And the restroom was clean and it had a flushing toilet and sink area with soap. The only down side to the restroom was that it didn't have any paper products. They only had a hose - which is pretty common here. Even when there's toilet paper, there's usually still a hose. But I came prepared with my toilet seat cover and TP.

The only issue I had with the lunch spot was that the food was pretty mediocre and I think a little pricey considering what it was. The meal costed us 57,500 riel which equates to about $14.50. The bill had both Cambodian and US amounts to make it easy. We had ordered three dishes: sweet and sour pork (boney pieces), a shrimp soup similar to tom yum and fried fish with a mango relish, a bottle of water and an energy drink.

So the roads are awful here and I guess with recent flooding it's made it even worse. From Phnom Penh to Battambang it's 183 miles. I don't remember the exact time we left the airport, but we didn't get to our hotel in Battambang until about 7 pm, which is 4 am Pacific time.

On the way here, the airport called and said that the person who took our box by mistake has returned it. Which is great, but we weren't planning on going back to Phnom Penh until the end of the trip. Need to figure out what to do about this box. What's in the box you ask? My dad packed boxes of kleenex, paper towel and some old clothes all to donate. Plus, my dad for some ridiculous reason instead of packing his stuff in his suitcase, he put some of it in the box so he's missing some clothes and such. I kind of went off on him about how I couldn't believe he did that especially since some of this diabetes testing supplies were also packed in that box.

We are all exhausted and cranky, okay maybe it's just me that's cranky. My dad and Linda are both driving me crazy. I am hoping that after a LONG night of sleep and hopefully no more headache, tomorrow with be much better.

So real quick, we are in Battambang because the funeral stuff we're going to do is going to be nearby. We're doing all the celebration/ceremony stuff at my mom's uncle's house. It'll take a day or two to get everything arranged and I think the ceremony (called bon) is a day or two as well. Once that's over, then we'll start the sightseeing and (hopefully) fun portion of the trip.
